Tip on Social Media Safety - Adults and youth today regularly interact with friends and strangers alike through a seemingly unlimited array of social networking sites. However, this now-commonplace means of communicating with others provides increased opportunities for sexual abusers to communicate with their intended victims. Recognizing this risk, organizations have a responsibility to provide guidelines for how their employees and program participants should and should not interact online. Baptism Class - A Baptism class for parents and godparents will be offered Monday, October 9, at 7 PM in the Parish Office Conference Room. Please call the office to register. Baptism dates can be scheduled once the training is completed. Expectant parents are encouraged to participate.
Confirmation classes for high school students will meet Sunday evenings from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM beginning in January 2018. There will be twelve sessions, and preparation will include a retreat and service opportunities. Students will be expected to attend all activities. The cost is $50.00 per child. The Sacrament itself will be celebrated in April or May. Registration will open late in the fall, 2017.
Fall Bazaar - Come one Come All to the Fall Holiday Bazaar. Looking for something to do? Want to help support a local parish and community? Come and join in on the fun! We will have crafts, baked goods, homemade treasures and so much more! This year we will also be hosting a van food drive for St. Vincent de Paul! This year’s bazaar will be Saturday, October 21 from 9 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday, 22, from 9 AM to 2 PM.
First Sacraments - First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation (Confession) registration is open for children in second grade or older. Children must be enrolled and participating in the parish's Religious Education program on Sunday mornings or attending a Catholic school. Children in Catholic schools are expected to make their First Communion at Our Lady of Sorrows. First Communion classes begin Sunday, October 1, at 9:30 AM following the 8:30 AM Mass. Sacramental prep classes for parents and children will meet one Sunday a month from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM beginning October 15. First Communion will be celebrated Sunday, April 29. The cost of the program is $50.00 per child. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office, or can be e-mailed to you. For more information, contact Evelyn at the office.
Ladies Wanted - Queen of Roses No. 164, a local chapter of the Young Ladies' Institute, meets every first Sunday of each month at 1:30 PM in Father Carberry Hall. This is an excellent group to join if you would like to meet other ladies in the parish and be active in the Church. We would love to have you drop by or contact Rosemary at email@example.com.
Religious Education Update - Exciting news: Religious Education is returning to its previous time slot between the 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM Masses on Sunday mornings. Beginning October 1, at 9:30 AM following the 8:30 AM Mass, children from kindergarten through eighth grade will meet in the Religious Education Center (below the gym) from 9:30 o 10:45 AM. The cost is $35.00 per child and $50.00 per family. Registration forms are available at the Parish Office, or can be e-mailed to you. Volunteers needed! The St. Vincent De Paul Portland Council (located near SE 82nd Ave. and Johnson Creek), is in need of volunteers to help in the Emergency Services Department, open Monday - Friday. At present, people calling in for help have to wait sometimes as long as an hour. We are in need of people comfortable with answering phones, working with the public, and who have basic computer skills. You will be trained before beginning, and volunteer shifts are usually four hours in the mornings or afternoons. Parish Un-Choir - The next rehearsals for the Parish Un-Choir will be Wednesday Morning, October 4, at 10:00 AM, and Thursday Evening, October 5, at 7 PM. Both rehearsals will be held in the Music Room in the Parish Office. Enter by the rear door of the Music Room.
